Education

Master of Science Education - My area of study was Literacy for students 12 and older. Walden University Bachelor of Business Administration - University of Texas - Minor English

Experience

For 12 years I taught "at-risk" adolescents in English and Economics, as well as Journalism and computers This required a lot of tutoring for testing such at the CAHSEE and SAT/ACT. My students often read at elementary levels yet had to perform in reading comprehension and writing at high school levels for testing. I helped many students obtain a high enough level to graduate within in one or two school years.

Hobbies

My interests are quite varied. I enjoy travel, worldwide. I read fiction and non-fiction. I have had a computer in my home since 1984 and have written grants for my students to get computers, ipads, and computer labs at our school. Instructor of teachers of English in Benxi, China. One of four groups of professional development contracted by the Ministry of Education. I assisted in development of the curriculum and training of other trainers. Conducted two weeks, seven hours per day of professional development and English instruction to Chinese teachers of English. Group of up to 35 educators who had been teaching English in Northern China from 2-20 years. Many did not have a good command of spoken English. In Chinese classrooms, students recite and memorize but do not actually engage in speaking or hearing and comprehending English. It was necessary to spend the first week teaching conversational English using methods I would use in an ESL classroom. Teachers were only allowed to speak English to each other within the classroom. They worked in groups, and pairs and as a whole class, learning to both speak and understand spoken English. The second week, professional development training included how to use strategies I employed in week one in their own classrooms. These teachers taught 5-8 grades. By the end of week two, they each presented in groups of 2-3 to the rest of the class as if the other educators were their students. They were videotaped while they employed their chosen strategies using multi-media, to engage participants. We were guests of the Secretary of Education for the Province and they were extremely pleased with the outcomes of our professional development.
